On January 1, 2010, the Olympic Torch made its way through Kirkland Lake, en route to Vancouver for the Winter Olympic Games. The township of Matachewan is very proud to have participated in making this once in a generation event happen.
Everyone gathered from Noon until 2 p.m. on a wintery New Years Day to cheer on the arrival of the Olympic Flame. At just past 1 p.m. Sammy Desjardins entered the Hockey Heritage North property, carrying the Olympic flame, which she took towards the stage and lit the cauldron. Sammy is a grade 10 student KLDCS who has used her disability as an inspiration to all who meet her.
Part of the celebration included various bands and acts by local citizens. Featured on stage were Jaime Taylor & Rockslide, Corey Taylor, Pascal Boucher, The Kirkland Lake Children’s Choir, and the KLDCS choir. Congratulation to all who performed, you certainly helped to make this a special day.
The Olympic Flame’s pan-Canadian journey began on October 30, 2009 and concluded in Vancouver on February 12, 2010, the night of the Opening Ceremonies. The relay covered 45,000 km, and 90% of Canada’s population was within a one hour drive of the torch at one point during the journey.
