The Beginning: After some interest from the community a small group of people formed "the Fitness Committee" and successfully secured $32, 000.00 in funding from the "Communities in Action Fund" (CIAF) to create a fitness centre. The Committee received full support from the council of the Corporation of the township of Matachewan and were provided with a space for the gym free of charge. With a media presence, the official Ribbon cutting ceremony was held at the new "Get Fit" Centre and was opened in

Mandate of the Fitness Committee:The general purpose of the Committee is to determine, develop, maintain, and promote physical fitness programs and opportunities to every citizen in the Town of Matachewan.

The committee consists of four to six persons.  Summary of committee positions and duties:

1. Duties of the President:  The President shall preside over all meetings, be well informed of all organization activities, - be aware of the future directions and plans of committee members, have a good working knowledge of the program policy and procedures, rules and the duties of all committee positions, be a supportive leader for all program activities, sign official documents on behalf of the Committee, represent an unbiased viewpoint allowing free discussion to take place. 
   
   
2. Duties of the Vice President: The Vice-President shall preside in the absence of President and shall have the full powers of the President on matters which come before the Committee in the absence of the President.
   
   
3. Duties of the Secretary:  Take minutes at each meeting and provide copies at the next meeting, provide an agenda (in consultation with Committee) for each meeting, maintain an up-to-date list of Committee contact details and provide to Committee and council representative,  deal with letters and correspondence.
   
   
4. Duties of the Treasurer:  The Treasurer shall act as the Committee Liaison to the Town council and Reeve,  be responsible for collection of monies, receipt and bank registration forms, prepare a financial report for each committee meeting, seek committee approval for payment of bills (at meetings), and pay bills by cheque following approval, have the books reviewed at the end of each year by Town Reeve and council,  in conjunction with Town Reeve and council, prepare an Income and Expenditure statement, keep detailed written records of all accounts
   
   
5. Administrative Positions:  The Administrative member (s) shall participate in committee meetings and can volunteer accordingly.
