Gym Photo The Beginning: After some interest from the community a small group of people formed "the Fitness Committee" and successfully secured $32, 000.00 in funding from the "Communities in Action Fund" (CIAF) to create a fitness centre. The Committee received full support from the council of the Corporation of the township of Matachewan and were provided with a space for the gym free of charge. With a media presence, the official Ribbon cutting ceremony was held at the new "Get Fit" Centre and was opened in

Operation of the Fitness Facility: Our fitness centre is unique as it is operated entirely by volunteers. Each volunteer is orientated on opening and closing the facility and are provided with a key once they have signed a volunteer agreement, have committed operating the gym at least 4 hours a month and have purchased a membership.

Our Accomplishments: We are proud to say that our community has become more physically active as a result of having this service in Matachewan. We have organized various activities and events to increase physical fitness such as 12.5 km walk-a-thons, volley ball tournaments, the formations of walking clubs, circuit and stability ball training, yoga and an assortment of exercise programs and have installed an outdoor basketball court.

Gym PhotoPartnerships: The Committee has partnered with several local Clubs, Centres and Organizations to incorporate physical activities with other community events. A partnership with a Youth Worker from the Aboriginal Women's Centre in the summer of 2006, resulted in the organization of activities such as baseball, paint ball, war games, and volley ball. A personal trainer has offered her services to the gym members for free. We have provided relay races and games for Halloween parties with the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 386 and have partnered with the Township for winter carnival events, sliding races and skating parties, Canada Day activities and many other physical games.

Goals: The Fitness centre is hoping to install a new security card lock system which will make working out that much more convenient and hassle free. This security system means that registered users of the fitness facility access the facility 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Gym Equipment: The gym is a heated and air conditioned facility with 2 bathrooms, a conference room and an aerobics/yoga video room. It is equipped with an elliptical trainer, a treadmill, a recumbent bike, a 4 person workout station (leg press, pulley system), free weights ranging from 3-80 lbs, a power cage with Olympic bar and up to 1000 lbs of Eurogrip plates, an arm curl station, and a seated calf raise station. There are also stability balls, exercise tubes/bands, and skipping ropes. Donations: This facility continues to operate with the help of gym memberships, fundraising and donations. If you are interested in making a financial donation please contact one of the Committee members today.
