The Township of Matachewan is very happy to say that the 2009 reunion was a resounding success. Those who were able to make it were treated to more than five jam packed days of excitement. The Township would like to sincerely thank all those who were involved in creating this special event, including the Reunion Committee, municipal staff, students and community volunteers.
Friday June 26th
The first day of the reunion was a chance for people to come back to Matachewan, get registered and get acclimatized again. This was some people’s first time back to Matachewan in many years and it was nice they had a day to explore the town and reminisce about past experiences. Evening events included a wine and cheese, tea and coffee and karaoke a little later on in the night.
Saturday June 27th
The first full day of the reunion took place on Saturday. The day began with a breakfast sponsored by the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 386. The recreation committee held a triathlon in the afternoon with a little variation as there was an obstacle course at the end which provided plenty of laughs to all who were watching. The afternoon also included bingo. There was a pork loin dinner and a dance later on in the night which were both successful events.
Saturday June 28th
The day began with a breakfast sponsored by the Pioneer Club and then various religious services. During the afternoon the recreation committee put on the survivor challenge which was a very popular event. Prime rib was served for dinner with an awards evening following. This was a good way to honour those who had done so much for the community over the years. Those who stayed were treated to a performance by Rattlesnake.
Monday June 29th
Monday began with breakfast, which was catered by J&B. This was followed by possibly the most popular event, the fish derby. The rest of the day was taken up by a few card tournaments and a spaghetti dinner. Evening invents included movies for people of all ages.
Tuesday June 30th
Tuesday was again started by breakfast from J&B. This was followed by a Volleyball tournament which was played at various locations around town. While this was going on, kids were able to see the town via a horse and buggy ride. Immediately following the volleyball tournament was a horseshoe tournament which is always popular in Matachewan. Once again, J&B provided an excellent roast beef dinner with a social event for adults to follow in the evening.
Wednesday July 1st
The last day of the reunion fell on Canada Day, which is always a celebration in Matachewan. There were children’s activities all day and the annual Canada Day Parade also took place. The reunion ended on a great note with the Fireworks display at night. As always, the display was wonderful and everyone that was able to stay around was given quite the show.
